Liberation Barbell is a body-positive barbell gym in Portland, OR, built around the idea that strength training should support your whole life — heart, muscles, and head — without weight stigma or diet talk.
Our community is open to queer folks, trans folks, people of all sizes, people of color, intersectional feminists, vegans, artists, parents, punks, book nerds, those in recovery, and anyone who has felt excluded by traditional gyms.
We treat strength as more than muscle. It is the care you show up with, the respect you offer your own process, and the way a community can hold space for many kinds of bodies and many kinds of goals.
Community that respects your process, your history, and your individual needs as you build strength.
Barbell training that focuses on what your body can do, not on shrinking, weighing, or measuring it.
A space that welcomes vegans, artists, parents, punks, book nerds, and anyone in recovery or returning to movement.
Strength at Liberation Barbell is treated as a whole-person pursuit, weaving together the physical, emotional, and intellectual sides of training. Members are encouraged to bring their full selves into the space, exploring what it means to flex the heart alongside the muscles and the mind. The gym frames lifting as a practice of care and curiosity, where progress is measured not only by what the body can do but also by how confidently a person shows up for their own process. By widening the definition of what strength looks like, the philosophy invites each person to redefine success on their own terms.
Our practice centers body positivity and intersectional feminism. We honor gender identity, personal history, and the many reasons people walk through the door — including those who want to lift without weight loss talk.
Respect is non-negotiable. We celebrate the inherent strengths and differences of every person in the room, and we work to keep this space welcoming as the community grows.
